Adding hierarchies to the matrix
Regardless of whether your data model contains a hierarchy, you can define multiple fields to use as
separate levels for rows or columns in a matrix. Initially, the fields display as separate rows or columns
in the matrix, but you can switch the display of the matrix to show only one level at a time. To see how
this works, let's modify the matrix to use the Data Model's built-in hierarchy for territories on rows
and a custom hierarchy of color and style on columns.
Click the matrix to ensure it is selected and then remove the SalesTerritoryGroup field from the
Rows box. Next, in the Sales Territory table, select the Territories check box.
1.
The three fields that are part of this hierarchy now display in the Rows box and appear in the
matrix: SalesTerritoryGroup , SalesTerritoryCountry , and SalesTerritoryRegion.
In the Power View Field list, locate the Style field in the Product table, drag it to the Columns
box, and then drop it below the Color field.
2.
On the Design tab, click Show Levels and then, on the menu that appears, click the Rows -
Enable Drill Down One Level At A Time command, as shown in Figure 5-16:
3.
FIGURE 5-16 You use the menu for the Show Levels button to enable drilling.
Note You can use the techniques described in steps 2 and 3 to work with hierarchies in bar
charts, column charts, pie charts, and maps, but only the matrix visualization requires you
to specify whether to show one level at a time.
Click Show Levels again, but this time select Columns - Enable Drill Down One Level At A Time.
4.
The matrix now appears as it did before you added the hierarchies to rows and columns.
In the matrix, double-click Europe to drill to the country level and then double-click Black to
drill to the style level, as shown in Figure 5-17. Notice the arrow that displays on the first row.
Click this arrow to return to the previous level.
