In-Depth Information
runs 1½-hour island boat trips, including a tour that takes in the local seal colony (per per-
son Skr375; 3pm). Boats depart from Ingrid Bergmanstorg.
On a teeny little island just off the harbour, Badholmens Vandrarhem ( 0525-321 50;
www.hamburgsundbokning.se ; r/tr/q Skr750/1050/1350; Apr-Oct) is a hostel reached by a
causeway. Four plain bunk-bedded huts named after creatures of the deep look out to sea,
and there's a cafe, laundry, sauna and hot tub for guests nearby. Behind the huts is a great
spot for sunbathing and diving.
A whimsical hotel offering a trip 'around the world in 23 rooms', Stora Hotellet (
0525-310 60; www.storahotellet-fjallbacka.se ; Galärbacken; s/d/ste Skr1490/1990/2750; ) was
originally owned by a ship's captain who decorated it with exotic souvenirs. He named
each room after his favourite ports and explorers (and girls!), and each tells its own story.
Extras include five dining venues that range from tapas bar to fine dining.
With its killer waterside location, Bryggan Fjällbacka ( 0525-310 60;
www.storahotelletbrygan.se ; Ingrid Bergmanstorg; lunch mains Skr125-150, dinner mains Skr265-365;
cafe 11am-10pm, restaurant 6.30pm-late) gives you two dining options: the informal Bryg-
gan Cafe & Bistro, where you can grab an open shrimp sandwich, salad and cold beer, and
the refined Restaurant Matilda, where you may feast on such fare as grilled scallops and
seared tuna steak.
The best way to reach Fjällbacka from Göteborg is either to take bus 871 to Håby and
then switch to bus 875 (Skr175, 2¼ hours in total, two daily), or else to take a train to
Dingle station, then transfer to Hamburgsund-bound bus 875 to Fjällbacka (Skr175, 2½
hours, two to three daily).
