WORTH A TRIP
RESÖ
This tiny island, 10km south of Strömstad, is reachable via an appealing narrow road that
winds its way through the forest and crosses a couple of bridges. The main reason for
coming here is to stay at the Resö Gamla Skola ( 0525-259 00; www.resogamlaskola.se ; s/d
Skr600/1000), the loveliest of the Bohuslän Coast's many budget lodgings. This cheerful
yellow house, a former school (you can check out the old gym upstairs) feels like a
friend's home: its cosy rooms are nautically themed and guests have access to a library, a
spacious kitchen and outdoor terraces on which to linger. The breakfast is superb, as are
the hosts.
Uddevalla
0522 / Pop 31,212
Bohuslän's capital, Uddevalla, is handy for transport connections but little else. Trains run
to Strömstad (Skr120, 1¼ hours, five daily) and Göteborg (Skr120, one hour 10 minutes,
hourly). Swebus Express ( www.swebusexpress.com ) runs to Oslo (Skr169, 2½ hours) up to
six times daily. Buses drop off and pick up from the bus station on the E6 motorway, rather
than in the town centre.
Strömstad
0526 / Pop 6288
A sparky resort, fishing harbour and spa town, Strömstad is laced with ornate wooden
buildings echoing those of nearby Norway. There are several fantastic Iron Age remains in
the area, and some fine sandy beaches at Capri and Seläter. Boat trips run to the most
westerly islands in Sweden, popular for cycling and swimming.
