Don't miss Sejlskibsbroen, a jetty lined with splendidly preserved wooden sailing ships,
and with an adjoining marina catering for the great number of yachts that sail local waters.
Naturama MUSEUM

Make a date with nature at Svendborg's impressive natural-history museum. Its three levels
focus on water, land and air: whale skeletons dominate the basement, Scandinavian mam-
mals congregate on the middle floor, and birds soar above it all. There's state-of-the-art
sound and lighting, plus regular film shows and a good hands-on section for kids.
Note: confirm opening days online, as the museum is closed Mondays outside Danish
school holidays.

HISTORIC BUILDING

The oldest house in Svendborg, dating from 1560, is a bumblebee-coloured structure that
leans tipsily to one side, highlighting its antiquity when all around is quite modern. The in-
terior is only open by appointment; enquire with Svendborg Museum (

Forsorgsmuseet MUSEUM

A thought-provoking place, the Welfare Museum is housed in Svendborg's old poorhouse,
which was home to paupers during its century of operation (from 1872). There were two
ways to be admitted to this institution - the 'worthy' poor (disabled or old, for example), or
the 'unworthy poor' (capable of work but unemployed, alcoholics, vagrants, 'women of
easy virtue').
It's hard to reconcile such an equitable society (today's Denmark) with such harsh judg-
ments, and this museum does a good job in explaining the times. There's also a moving
section on life in children's homes and orphanages.
