In-Depth Information
Funen's sleepy towns curl themselves around fortified mansions and medieval houses.
Offshore, scattered islets are home to small communities - sometimes of people, some-
times just birds, rabbits and deer. Things liven up in Svendborg, the largest settlement out-
side Odense, whose bars and cafes are popular with visiting yachties.
Kerteminde
Pop 5860
Small, sleepy Kerteminde has much to offer beyond its pleasant cobbled heart of timbered
houses. The impressive aquarium, sandy beaches and yacht-filled harbour make for pleas-
ant diversions, and there's a radiant collection of work by 'peasant painter' Johannes
Larsen.
Kerteminde is also a base for visiting the superb Viking ship at Ladby, or for getting
away from it all on Romsø.

Johannes Larsen Museet
ART MUSEUM

10am-5pm Jun-Aug,
closed Mon Sep-May)
The vivid naturalistic paintings of wildlife and provincial Danish scenes that flowed from
the brush of Johannes Larsen are on show in his former home north of town. Larsen
(1867-1961) painted near obsessively from his studio here, while his wife, Alhed, also an
artist, captured the lush blooms of her greenhouse.
This is a quality attraction for a town of this size. Beside the house there's an impressive
purpose-built exhibition hall showcasing more of their work, alongside paintings by 50
other artists from the Fyn school. The tiny cafe (in an old washhouse) at the end of the
flower- and duck-filled garden serves light lunches and homebaked cakes.
