In-Depth Information
As I said, this was an extreme change to the cast part. But by thinking through
the likely changes when defi ning your machining, you ensure that the updates are
successful.
FIGURE 6.31 The Derived Part dialog makes it possible to select what type of data you
want to reuse.
In this case, using the XZ plane as a datum for making the cut not only makes
sense but is a good stable foundation that won't be affected by a change to the
casting. Using the draft-convergence points for locating the holes also makes
sense because the model is mirrored about the planes; it's highly unlikely that
those points will be broken, because the drafted faces will be kept in a cast part.
So far, we've looked at scenarios that make it easier to reuse data that is cre-
ated in house. Now more than ever, a portion of designs are often sourced from
outside companies.
Supplier Content Center
Many experienced CAD users are accustomed to working with IGES or STEP
data. Inventor offers other options as well, including the ability to import data
from (and export data to) several other CAD systems (see Appendix B) without
having to use the neutral fi le formats. Along with a lot of fl exibility regarding
import/export formats, Inventor comes with links for access to online content
from dozens of vendors in the Supplier Content Center.
