One of the giants of the Svalbard travel scene, Spitsbergen Travel has a staggering array of
tour options. They arrange up to 13 weekly boat cruises around Isfjord, which take in bird-
watching, fossil-hunting and glacier views.
Dog-Sledding
The following companies offer half-day excursions with wheeled sleds pulled by pack
dogs. There are up to 38 weekly departures in summer.
Hiking & Fossil-Hunting
Summer hiking possibilities are endless and any Svalbard tour company worth its salt can
organise half-, full- and multiday hikes. The easiest options are three-hour fossil-hunting
hikes (from Nkr500), some of which take you up onto the moraine at the base of the
Longyearbreen glacier.
Popular destinations for other hikes, many of which include glacier hikes, include
Platåberget (three hours, Nkr450), up onto the Longyearbreen glacier itself (five hours,
Nkr650), Sarkofagen (525m above sea level; six hours, Nkr620) and Hiorthfjellet (900m
above sea level; 10 hours, Nkr1225).
Spitsbergen Outdoor Activities
and
Poli Arctici
are among the better smaller operators.
Horse Riding
Spitsbergen Outdoor Activities
organises three-hour, twice-daily horse-riding expeditions
in the country beyond Longyearbyen for Nkr750 per person.
