In-Depth Information
Offering many of the usual and several unusual trips, including seven-hour kayaking ex-
peditions to Hiorthamn (Nkr950), with an additional 10-hour hiking and kayaking chal-
lenge to Hiortfjellet (Nkr1225). Other options are the various excursions along Advent-
dalen.
Winter Activities
Basecamp Spitsbergen and Spitsbergen Travel offer some truly epic, multiday cross-coun-
try ski expeditions.
Dog-Sledding
The environmentally friendly rival to snowmobiling, dog-sledding is in many ways the
iconic Svalbard winter activity - the soundtrack of huskies barking and the scrape of the
sled across the ice are a far more agreeable accompaniment in the wilderness than the
drone of a snowmobile engine. Expect to pay around Nkr1290 for a four-hour excursion,
although longer expeditions are possible.
Dedicated dog-sledding operators include:
Svalbard Husky
Svalbard Villmarkssenter
Green Dog Svalbard
Basecamp Spitsbergen (7hr trips adult/child Nkr1990/995)
Snowmobiling
Riding or driving a snowmobile is the main way of getting around Svalbard in winter and
it certainly enables you to cover a greater distance and see more than is otherwise possible.
Before setting out, pick up a copy of Driving a Snowmobile in Svalbard from the tourist
office. To drive a snowmobile scoot, you'll need to flash your home driving licence. Check
with the tourist office; many areas are off-limits for snowmobiles. Daily rates range from
Nkr1000 to Nkr1250 for the basic model.
Most companies will offer snowmobile safaris. Spitsbergen Trave l has a particularly
wide range of excursions, while Svalbard Snøscooterutleie (
79 02 46 61;
www.scooterutleie.svalbard.no ) offers snowmobile rental.
Sample expeditions include (prices may vary between companies):
