Kemijärvi, situated on north-south Hwy 5, is many people's first glimpse of Lapland. Its
location on a spectacular lake and the creations of its sculpture festival are the main attrac-
tions. It's a pleasant, quiet town that makes a good stop.

On the western side of town (follow the path past the campsite and keep going), this noble
old building displays many of the wooden sculptures from past years of the Kuvan-
veistoviikko festival. Follow signs for 'Taidekeskus'.

Runs sleighing excursions pulled by well-loved reindeer or sturdy Finnhorses; you can
also ride the latter year-round. Based at Kallela, a farm 10km from town on the Sodankylä
road.

This couple can take you out fishing on the lakes hereabouts, and organise permits and
tackle. They also do longer trips to other parts of Lapland, including the Norwegian coast.
