Using Excel PowerPivot to allow user-created models
Previously, Excel has been limited to working with data centrally orlimited bythe per-
formance issues when working with large amounts of data. This has led to a number
of tools being created that allows users to create their own analysis models. With Ex-
cel 2010, a new add-in was released, provided by the Analysis Services team, which
allowed users to create their own tabular models from Excel. You have all the capab-
ilities that you have in Analysis Services tabular mode except for row-level security,
DirectQuery, and partitioning.
In Excel 2013, PowerPivot is included directly into the Excel through the new data
model. This allows all Excel users to import millions of rows of data into an Excel
spreadsheet and to create relationships between tables. For more advanced model-
ing, you need Microsoft Office Professional Plus where you can activate the Power-
Pivot add-in.
