Self-service tools
Self-service tools have become very popular in the past years. These include tools
that allow users to create their own reports against a published model, and tools that
allows a user to create their own model for analysis integrating data sources in the
end-user tool directly.
Using Excel as a self-service tool against Analysis Services
cubes
Excel is the world's most common BI tool and is a really powerful query tool against
Analysis Services. In Chapter 5 , Querying Your Cube , you created a simple report
in Excel against your multidimensional cube. But Excel is not limited to just simple
reports, in the latest versions you have the ability to add advanced graphics and new
types of filters that allow users to work with Excel as an advanced reporting tool.
The benefit of Excel as an end-user tool is that most business users are very familiar
with the functionality and instinctively know how to create their own reports with just
a short introduction.
