Chapter 9. Quality Control
Up until this point in our project we have been working pretty much exclusively with
V-Ray's default quality settings. Given that we are now closing in on creating our final
output renders, the time has come to take a look at making improvements to the qual-
ity settings in a number of key areas. Specifically in this chapter, we will take a look at
improving lighting, global illumination, image sampling, and scene materials. Taking
the time to make even tiny improvements in each of these areas will ultimately lead to
the production of much cleaner looking, higher-quality final renders.
To help us examine each of these key areas, we will need to make a series of high-
quality test renders that we can take into our image viewer or editor of choice and
then scrutinize closely.
Note
While you can certainly take renders of your own as we work through this chapter,
given the time required to complete many of these high resolution renders, you
may wish to simply refer to the printed images seen in this chapter.
Of course, while some of the changes made will be clear and obvious in the prin-
ted graphics, others may be too subtle to be easily picked out at the sizes seen
here. To be able to access and then scrutinize the final high resolution renders
up close, please go to the Chapter_09 folder under Exercise_Files | Fin-
al_Renders and open them up.
Whichever version of the renders you use, just be sure that once you have them open
in your viewer or editing application, you zoom in close, examine them carefully, and
then make copious notes on what you think may be missing or could be improved in-
side the scene. If we really want to push the quality of our work at this stage of the
process, we will need to be as critical as possible, preferably getting one or two out-
side critiques on the renders so as to help us compile as objective a set of notes as
possible. Good Internet forums can be especially helpful in this regard.
