Tip
If you are the kind of person who gets easily offended or disheartened when
others pick holes in your work, it may be best to forego the extra help. In truth
though, listening to and evaluating the validity of all criticism can be an essential
Quality Control tool that a good artist should learn to use.
Defining our goals
To get started, as in our previous chapters, we do want to set ourselves some definite
goals for this phase of the project. In this instance, these could be very simply stated
as wanting to evaluate and then improve the key areas of lighting, global illumination,
image sampling, and materials so as to ultimately improve the technical and artistic
quality of the final renders we will be taking.
Note
We do need to note that in V-Ray there are a number of different ways in which
we could approach improving our final image quality, each of them having their
own merits and drawbacks. Some approaches, while quick and easy to set up,
pay a heavy penalty in terms of final render times.
Others, although producing quicker final renders, are much more technical in
their set up and require a deeper level of understanding of how the parameters
being tweaked interconnect and so affect one another. In this chapter, we will fo-
cus on creating a setup that uses a little of both so as to balance both speed and
quality.
