In-Depth Information
67. Zoom out so that you are looking from about 500 kilometers away. Use the Pan tool to position
the globe so you can see both the GPS track in the north and Lexington Roads in the south.
68. Use the Measure tool to determine the approximate distance from Lexington, KY to Frankfort,
MI. Zoom to the approximate center of the Lexington roads using Zoom To Layer. Start the
measure tool. Make the measurement units miles. Zoom to the GPS layer. Double-click the
approximate center of Frankfort, MI. Answer: ________ miles.
69. Click on the Navigate icon. Find the Navigation Mode button. Read the explanation on the
Status bar or the ToolTip.
Until you change the sense of this button (or the software does, as it seems to sometimes
without really telling you), the Navigate tool operates in “globe navigation mode” signified by a
blue background of the icon. When you move the cursor, the globe revolves around the center
of the Earth. When you go into “surface navigation mode,” (the icon has a white background)
the center of rotation of the map becomes whatever point you specify by clicking on the
globe.
70. Click the Navigation Mode button so that its background no longer appears blue. Experiment
with the Navigate cursor. You can actually look at the Earth from the inside. With Zoom, move
out from Earth some 5000 kilometers. Use Navigate again and note the effect: The center of
rotation stays locked at the point on the surface where it was before.
72 Add another GPS track as data to the map:
[___] IGIS-Arc\Other_Data\Mystery_Location _1.shp (use a red square, size 18). Where is it?
________________. What is it? 8 ________________.
73. Add as data
[___] IGIS-Arc\Other_Data\Countries\Countries.lyr
Also add another GPS track as data to the map:
[___] IGIS-Arc\Other_Data\Mystery_Location _2.shp (use a red circle, size 4).
Zoom out. Use the Identify tool on the Countries layer. Which ones are represented?

74. Dismiss ArcGlobe.
Making a Terrain
Because of the very large data sets involved, making a Terrain is somewhat involved. Here is a summary
of the steps that you will use.
8 Hint: Hot. Dangerous.
