Table J-1 summarizes source-video formats with some descriptive commentary about
them. This list is representative but not exhaustive and you may have content presented
to you in other formats.

Characteristics
Betacam
A Sony format for storing studio-quality analog video.
Betacam SP
Another Sony studio format.
Betamax
A defunct consumer-video format marketed unsuccessfully by Sony
against the VHS format from JVC. VHS won the marketing battle,
but there is some archival material still extant in the Betamax
format. The tape cassettes were used as the basis for the Sony
professional line of Betacam recording systems.
Digital 8
A consumer digital-video replacement for Video 8 and Hi8. Digital
8 is compressed but only contains I-frames. The compression ratio is
5:1 and the codec is a special DVC-format DCT. The throughput is
25 Mbps video-data rate.
DV
Often delivered via FireWire interfaces. DV is compressed but only
contains I-frames. The compression ratio is 5:1 and the codec is a
special DVC-format DCT. The throughput is 25 Mbps video data rate
DVCAM
The professional variant of the DV format marketed by Sony
and Ikegami. DVCAM is compressed but only contains I-frames.
The compression ratio is 5:1 and the codec is a special DVC-format
DCT. The throughput is 25 Mbps video-data rate.
