J-1 Source-Video Formats (Continued)
Format
Characteristics
DVCPro
The professional variant of the DV format marketed by Panasonic,
Philips, Ikegami, and Hitachi. DVCPro is compressed but only contains
I-frames. The compression ratio is 5:1 and the codec is a special
DVC-format DCT. The throughput is 25 Mbps video-data rate.
DVCPro HD
A high-definition variant of the DVCPro format.
HDCAM
A Sony format that has a 7:1 compression ratio and stores
high-definition TV on Betacam tapes.
Motion JPEG
An I-frame based codec with individual frames coded using JPEG.
Pixlet
An I-frame codec developed by Apple and Pixar with the individual
frames coded using wavelets.
S-VHS
An improved version of VHS, which yields usable video
for compression.
U-Matic
An ancient analog format, no longer used but there may be
significant amounts of archived material in this form.
VHS
A domestic format of average to low quality. Tapes can be recorded
in SP and LP modes. These tapes are not a good source of video for
compression.
