Database Reference
In-Depth Information
NOTE
This chapter has three sample files available on this topic's Missing CD page at
www.missingmanuals.com/cds/fmp13tmm . Use the file called Invoices Security for this and the fol-
lowing exercises. The files called Access and No Access are for the “File Access” section later in
this chapter.
1. In the Invoices Security file, choose File Manage Security. Switch to the Priv-
ilege Sets tab and then click New .
The Edit Privilege Set dialog box (see Figure 18-3 ) appears.
2. In the Privilege Set Name box, type Project Manager , and in the Description box,
type create and edit jobs, create new invoices .
If the privilege set name matches the department name or personnel role, it's a lot
easier to apply it later on when you're creating accounts. Use the description to help
you remember the basic rules for the set.
3. Select these checkboxes :
▪ Allow printing
▪ Allow user to override data validation warnings
▪ Disconnect user from FileMaker Server when idle
▪ Allow user to modify their own password
4. Set the “Available menu” pop-up menu to “Editing only.”
People can't get into trouble exploring if they can't even open dialog boxes that are
above their pay grades.
That's it for the Other Privileges part of the dialog box. But if you leave the Project Manager
privilege set with these settings, people can't do anything very useful. Next, you'll look at
the section where all the granularity is hiding, so you can start adding real privileges to the
list. Leave the Edit Privilege Set window open while you read through the introductory ma-
terial below. The next tutorial takes up where the last one left off.
NOTE
You may have noticed there's no checkbox for “Allow user to manage the database,” or “Allow user
to create tables.” Only accounts with full access can open the Manage Database window and use its
features. The same goes for the Security window's Accounts and Privilege Sets tabs.
