In-Depth Information
2. From the General tab, select “Allow drag and drop text selection.”
If you don't like using drag-and-drop, just come back here and turn it off.
3. Click OK .
The dialog box disappears.
This setting changes the way FileMaker behaves. Any database you open in your copy of
FileMaker can use drag-and-drop editing now. Here's how to make it work:
1. Make a new record (Records New Record) .
Now you've got a nice clean work surface.
2. In the First Name field, type Crowder .
Next you'll drag the text to the Last Name field, where it belongs.
3. Double-click the word “Crowder.”
The word is highlighted to let you know it's selected.
4. Drag the selected word down to the Last Name field .
As you drag, you won't see the text you're dragging, but a “+” button appears on the
cursor showing that you have something copied. When your mouse reaches the Last
Name field, the field is highlighted, showing you the new target. When you release
the mouse, “Crowder” appears in the Last Name field.
5. Press the Delete key .
The text in the First Name field is still highlighted when you release the mouse, and
that's what disappears.
You can also drag and drop text within the same field, say if you want to rearrange the words
you've typed into your Notes field. In that case though, the text isn't copied, it's moved, so
there's no need to delete the original text. If your whole layout doesn't fit in your window, it
will scroll as you drag. Just make sure you don't release the mouse until you see the place
you want to drag your text to.
TIP
If you want to copy your text when dragging within a field, then hold down the Ctrl (Option) key
while you drag. You'll see the “+” that indicates your text is being copied and not moved.
