Database Reference
In-Depth Information
only one visible in the Open Remote File dialog box. That way users can open the solution
only through the file you intend.
When you make changes to the Network Access settings, FileMaker is actually making
changes to the privilege sets in the selected file. When you turn on “All users,” FileMaker
simply turns on the “Access via FileMaker Network” extended privilege for every privilege
set. If you choose “No users,” it turns this extended privilege off for every set. When you
specify people by privilege set, you get to decide which privilege sets have this extended
privilege turned on. If you prefer, you can make these changes manually by choosing
File→Manage→Security. Click the Extended Privileges tab and then look for the [fmapp]
extended privilege ( Assigning Extended Privileges ) .
NOTE
You can control the access settings for each file even if you don't turn on network sharing. The set-
tings you make to a file stick with that file even when you move it to another computer, so you can
use this window to set the sharing options for a file before you send it to the host computer.
Working with a Shared File
The easiest way to get a colleague connected to your newly-shared database is to send him a
link. Just choose File→Send→Link to Database and FileMaker creates an email in your
email program with a clickable link that finds and open the database. Your colleague must
have FileMaker Pro for this link to work. If the recipient doesn't have an email program, all
is not lost. Just use the handy copy button to copy the link and then send him the info
through chat, SMS, or even a text document.
Opening a Shared File
But FileMaker has a more direct route to opening shared files, too. Launch FileMaker Pro on
another computer on the network and then follow these steps:
1. Choose File Open Remote .
Or if you're already looking at the Open File dialog box, click the Remote button in-
stead. Either way, you see the Open Remote File dialog box ( Figure 19-2 ) .
2. From the Hosts list, select the appropriate host .
Even if you only have one host, you have to select it. After you do, the shared files
appear in the Available Files list. (If the host computer you're looking for isn't listed,
see Understanding the Open Remote File Dialog Box for advice.)
