TAKE THE ROAD TO PEMENANG
With your own transport, the spectacular coastal road north from central Senggigi to
Pemenang (24km) makes a great day out, passing through small villages set behind sweep-
ing, invariably empty, bays and stands of coconut palm. Wending up and over the steep
headlands that separate the bays you get fine views of the Gili Islands - three tiny white-
rimmed specks in a turquoise sea - and across to Gunung Agung on Bali. First of the
beaches is Karandangan , with its charcoal-black sand, Sunday seafood warung and a
good restaurant; Mangsit and Klui both have great beaches, with accommodation; then
there's Malimbu, the especially pretty whitish-sand Nippah , and Teluk Kodek and Teluk
Nara (for fast boats to the Gilis and Bali, and with pearl farms offshore). There are occa-
sional warung along the route, good for drinks and snacks, and there's nothing to stop you
swimming off any of the lovely crescents of sand - except on Sundays you'll likely be the
only one in the water.
Pemenang marks the turn-off to Bangsal (for public and shuttle boats to the Gili Islands).
A couple of kilometres beyond Pemenang you reach the beautiful beach at Sire and its
cluster of deluxe accommodation.
