Senggigi and around
Once Lombok's premier beach resort, SENGGIGI is these days in limbo, its greyish beaches
trumped by the idyll of the easily accessible white-sand Gili Islands, and the nearby airport
closed to be replaced by the new one near Praya. As foreign tourists have looked elsewhere,
central Senggigi seems to be focusing more on the domestic market, with massive cigarette
billboards and a growing number of massage and karaoke joints along the broken pavements.
It's not all bad news, however: there are some good hotels and restaurants in the central re-
sort, and the outer beaches at Batu Bolong (a 10min walk south), and Mangsit and Klui
(4-6km north) are genuinely appealing. The coastline is indisputably handsome, its 10km
series of sandy, swimmable bays curving deeply between a sequence of dramatic headlands.
And Senggigi still has the best tourist facilities on mainland Lombok: its many tour agen-
cies and resaurants, plus its transport connections, dive centres and souvenir shops continue
to make it a convenient base. Older, long-stay tourists in particular are drawn here for a few
weeks in the sun, and an increasing number of expat villas are being built in the hills over-
looking the coast.
