ACTIVITIES
Activity tours Munduk Wilderness ( 0361 870 0001, mundukwilderness.com ) provides
a number of off-road driving tours in 4WD buggies in the region (from $95/person for two),
as well as horseriding treks (2hr 30min; $85) and two-day multi-activity trips ($130, includes
twin-share room). Prices include transfers from major resorts throughout north and south
Bali.
Cultural workshops Puri Lumbung Cottages has an exceptionally diverse range of cultural
workshops (from $15 for up to two people): as well as the usual courses in cooking ($35) and
yoga, it can run sessions in herbal medicine, Indonesian language, dancing, bamboo instru-
ment making and Balinese music classes.
Trekking Guesthouses arrange local guides; expect to pay Rp60,000-100,000/hr/guide de-
pending on whether you just have someone to show you the way or an expert English-speak-
ing guide. Most treks are rural hikes through clove and coffee plantations, via market gar-
dens growing blue hydrangeas (used for offerings), vanilla and mandarins, and through rice-
fields and villages. You're also likely to be offered treks to several waterfalls in the area, the
closest being Munduk Waterfall (about 1km east of Munduk). Treks to and between lakes
Tamblingan and Buyan are also well worth doing, or you could try climbing Gunung Lesong
(1860m).
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Like the altitude, the quality of accommodation in Munduk is generally high and because
of the steep gradients, some hotels are built below rather than on the road, and offer superb
views. Every place to stay has an attached restaurant - usually OK rather than particularly
exciting. Puri Lumbung Cottages has the best in the area.
Aditya Homestay 0852 388 2968. One of the newest accommodation options in the vil-
lage is this friendly homestay in a two-storey house with simply furnished but spotless com-
fortable modern rooms, all with hot wat er and a v eranda. Another good reason to come are
the views - some of the best in Munduk. Rp435,000
Karang Sari 0821 4484 4844, karangsari-guesthouse.com . This is a lovely stay, its
bright rooms of modern Balinese furnishings opening onto a garden with views to the hills -
upper rooms have the best views but not direct garden access. Older r ooms in t he Dutch-era
“Bougainvillea” block beneath are more spacious but also lack views. Rp300,000
