Using the Create Tab
Begin by creating a primitive. Click on the Create tab in the Command Panel, as
shown in Figure 2.6.

Click on the Create tab.
Next, click on the Box icon, and then click in the viewport and drag to create the box
in one direction. Then release the mouse button and pull out the box in another
direction (see Figure 2.7).

Create several boxes and notice that each time you create a new box, it appears as a different color.
These boxes you have created are called primitives , and they are used to start build-
ing models in 3ds Max. They basically give you a starting point. Experiment with
the other icons on the Create tab and see what kind of primitives you can create.
One way to focus on a particular primitive is to use the Select tool located on the
main toolbar, select a primitive, and hit the Z key. This will focus in on the prim-
itive selected.
Right-clicking on an object brings up a marking menu. When you select either the
Move, Rotate, or Scale option, you can move the object using its respective tool
selection to move it in space, as opposed to moving the camera around the object.
