Phang Nga Bay
Famous for its oddly shaped limestone formations, Phang Nga Bay is a collection of 40 is-
lands. The most famous is the James Bond Island which is here the movie "The Man with
a Golden Gun" was shot. Its actual name is Ko Khao Phing Kan (Leaning Rock). The other
popular island is Ko Tapu which is the idyllic island that ends up on most of the pictures.
In the bay there are many tour operators who are happy to organize a trip by kayak. These
tours will lead you through the standard route around the bay passing strange rock forma-
tions, limestone outcrops, hidden lakes, tiny beaches and caves. You may visit a village on
Ko Panyi which is built on stilts. The mosque and the graveyard are the only places which
are built on ground. It can be overly touristy during the day so if you want to really experi-
ence the village then stay the night. If you go inland you can see more of the village and eat
at the local stalls. To experience a real local fishing village check out Ko Ma Paay.
