POP 2910 / ELEV 120M
Petra's charms aren't immediately apparent, but stay a while and its long, straight and
narrow streets and stone houses will quickly grow on you. With an in-town winery, a
couple of terrific places to eat and an intriguing museum, it's a low-key place where
you'll be pleased you lingered longer than planned.
Sights
Petra's principal claim to historical fame is its favourite son, Juníper Serra, born here in
1713. A Franciscan missionary and one of the founders of what is now the US state of
California, he could have had no inkling of his destiny as he grew up in this rural centre.
The street on which the museum dedicated to his life is located is one of the prettiest in
Mallorca.
Ermita de la Mare de Déu de Bonany MONASTERY
Four kilometres southwest of Petra on a wooded hill stands this hermitage where Juníper
Serra gave his last sermon in Mallorca before heading for the New World. Elements of
the present church date to the 18th century but the place was overhauled in 1925. The
views over the plains are magnificent.
Museu Fra Juníper Serra MUSEUM
(Carrer des Barracar Alt 6; by appointment) The Museu Fra Juníper Serra contains
mementos of Juníper Serra's missionary life. Next door at No 4 is the house in which he
was born. Walk to Carrer des Barracar Baix 2 and ring the bell. If you get lucky, you'll
get admission to the house and museum. All over the streets in this part of town are cer-
amic depictions of his eventful life.
