In-Depth Information
Sa Font is one of the few reminders of the Arab presence on the island. This com-
plex qanawat (well and water distribution structure) is difficult to date but was taken over
by the Muslims' Christian successors after 1229. It lies in Pina, 5.5km northwest of
Montuïri, just 50m south of the Església de Sants Cosme i Damià, on the road to Lloret
de Vistalegre.
WORTH A TRIP
ELS CALDERERS
On a pretty country back road between Montuïri and Manacor, this stout rural
mansion has been converted into a period museum. Els Calderers
( www.elscalderers.com ; adult/child €8/4; 10am-6pm Apr-Sep, shorter hours rest of year)
was built around 1750, although the estate has been occupied since 1285. The
mansion may lack the grandeur and elegant decay of other such Mallorcan es-
tates, but is nonetheless well worth the detour.
On the ground floor of the main building, around a leafy courtyard, are the main
salons and guest rooms, along with the family chapel and wine cellar - every de-
centfinca(country estate) had one of each. You can sample a little house red. As a
letter from 1895 (on display) notes, the Els Calderers wine wasmuy flojito(very av-
erage). This doesn't seem to have changed.
Els Calderers is 11km east of Montuïri. Take the Ma15 towards Manacor and turn
left 300m after the turn-off to the village of Sant Joan and follow the signs.
