MIDSUMMER
VINE STATUS:
Early veraison / Rapid shoot growth
IN THE VINEYARD:
→ Control weeds under the vines.
→ Mow weeds, cover crop, or ground cover between the rows.
→ Continue to monitor for pests likespider mites, leafhoppers, sharpshooters, grass-
hoppers, and Japanese beetles. Treat if needed.
→ First year vines: Continue to tie the growing shoots that grow out along the fruiting
wire.
→ Third year and beyond: Continue shoot training—pushing the shoots up between
the double positioning wires.
→ Third year and beyond: Remove laterals.
→ Third year and beyond: Thin the leaves around the fruiting zone to leave 70 to 80
percent of the fruit exposed.
→ As veraison starts, turn off the irrigation.
→ In clay soils, if the ground is cracking, till or disc to eliminate cracks.
→ Keep an eye out for birds and make sure you have sufficient netting in stock.
→ Continue to control gophers, and new pests like raccoons or foxes that may come
into the vineyard attracted by the ripening fruit.
