→ Third year vines: Pinch off grapes on vines that do not have bark on the trunk and
cordons.
EARLY SUMMER
VINE STATUS:
Late fruit set / Rapid shoot growth
IN THE VINEYARD:
→ Continue to spray for fungal diseases every week or two.
→ Control weeds under the vines.
→ Mow weeds, cover crop, or ground cover between the rows.
→ First year vines: Continue to tie the growing shoots as they grow out along the
fruiting wire.
→ Third year and beyond: Start shoot training—pushing the shoots up between the
double wires. Third year and beyond: Thin shoots and remove laterals.
→ Remove suckers from the base of the vine.
→ Continue to monitor the water needs of the vines, checking for signs of drought
stress and checking soil moisture with a tensiometer.
→ Third year and beyond: Trim shoots above the top of the second set of wires to 6 to
12 in.
→ If the weather is dry, stop spraying for fungal diseases.
→ Continue gopher control.
→ Check fencing for holes or breaches that can let in deer.
