VINE STATUS:
Flowering occurs when the average temperature is between 61°F and 68°F (from
30 to 80 days after bud burst).
IN THE VINEYARD:
→ Monitor vines for pests such as thrips, spider mites, leafhoppers, mealybugs, and
sharpshooters.
→ A flush of root growth begins.
→ Continue to spray for fungal diseases every week or two.
→ Control weeds under the vines.
→ Mow or till cover crop between the rows.
→ Second year vines: Tie the shoots as they grow up the stake and out the fruiting
wire.
→ Apply a well-balanced fertilizer.
→ Gophers become very active now; be sure to control them before they get out of
hand.
LATE SPRING
VINE STATUS:
Fruit set comes 7 to 10 days after flowering. / Rapid shoot growth
IN THE VINEYARD:
→ Monitor vines for Japanese beetles.
→ Look for signs of eutypa or phomopsis.
→ Continue to spray for fungal diseases every week or two.
→ Control weeds under the vines.
→ Mow weeds, cover crop, or ground cover between the rows.
→ First year vines: Tie shoots as they grow out along the fruiting wire; these will be-
come the permanent cordons
→ Monitor the water needs of the vines, checking for signs of drought stress and
checking soil moisture with a tensiometer.
→ First and second year vines: Pinch off grapes.
