→ In warmer areas, monitor vines for early signs of pests like borers, mealybugs, and
spider mites.
EARLY SPRING
VINE STATUS:
Bud burst
IN THE VINEYARD:
→ Keep an eye out for swelling buds on the canes, which happens when the average
daily temperature is 50°F (10°C).
→ At bud burst, begin spraying for fungal diseases.
→ Inspect the irrigation system and make sure the drip lines are clamped to the wire.
Replace any damaged or missing drip emitters.
→ Mow or till cover crop between rows.
→ Watch for late frosts and protect the vines as needed.
→ Remove winter-damaged wood, and any vines that are sickly or weak.
→ In cold-winter climates, sow spring cover crop.
→ Control emerging weeds around the base of the vines.
→ Monitor vines and growing spurs for pests like mealybugs, spider mites, and thrips.
Treat as needed. If sharpshooters or caterpillars occur in your area, put up sticky or
pheromone traps.
