FRENCH DRAIN A method to remove excess water in poorly drained soils. Typically, per-
forated 4 inch rigid PVC pipes are set in gravel at the bottom of a trench.
FRUIT SET Occurs about 10 days after flowering in midspring; the beginning of berry
development.
FRUITING WIRE On the VSP trellis, the second wire up from the ground on which the
cordon is trained and tied.
FRUITING ZONE The area above the cordon, where berries develop.
FUNGUS Organisms that cause common diseases of grapevines, including powdery mil-
dew, bunch rot, and downy mildew.

GREEN-GROWING VINE A grafted grapevine delivered for planting after the leaves and
roots are growing.
GROW TUBES Plastic or cardboard cylinders that are placed around newly planted vines
to protect them from pest damage and to encourage growth.
GROWING SEASON The number of days between bud burst and leaf fall when the grape
vine is actively growing.
GROWTH CYCLE The annual growth of a grapevine.
GUIDE WIRES The double set of wires above the fruiting wire used to guide growing
shoots into the best location for receiving the maximum sun. Also called positioning or
training wires.
