HARVEST When the ripe grapes are picked. It is 70 to 140 days after berry set.
HARVESTING The process of picking the ripe grapes.
HYDROMETER A gauge used to measure specific gravity of grape juice to determine the
percentage of sugar, or Brix.

ICEWINE Sweet dessert wine made from grapes allowed to remain on the vine well into
winter, so that they freeze.
INTERNODE The portion of a shoot or cane between two adjacent nodes.

LATE-HARVEST WINE Sweet dessert wine made from grapes allowed to remain on the vine
after ripening and sometimes infected with botrytis.
LATERAL SHOOT A shoot that develops at a leaf node off the main shoot. These laterals
may reach several feet in length and need to be removed.
LEAF FALL The period when vines begin to go dormant in the late fall and early winter.
Leaves turn red, yellow, and then brown, and drop off the plant.
LEAF PULLING The technique of taking leaves off the vine during the summer in order to
expose the inner plants and fruit to the sun.
