DRIP LINE The irrigation line, typically ½ inch flexible PVC pipe, that supplies water to
the vines via emitters.
DRIP WIRE The wire trellis system closest to the ground. The drip line is suspended from
the drip wire.

EMITTER A plastic valve inserted into the drip line that emits a measured amount of wa-
ter. In-line emitters are built into the interior of the drip line.
EVAPOTRANSPIRATION The process of water being drawn from the ground, through the
vine's root system, up into the plant, and then out of the leaves.
EXCESSIVE VIGOR A characteristic of grapevines that have an excessive number of lateral
shoots and too many large, thick leaves with long internodes.

FERTILIZING The process of supplying the nutrients needed for proper vine development.
FIELD GRAFTING The process of joining a scion to a rootstock while the rootstock is
growing in the field.
FLOWERING When fruit bunch initiation or bloom occurs. Normally this takes place 30
to 80 days after bud burst, when average mean temperatures reach 61°F to 68°F (16°C to
20°C).
FLUSH There are two periods when roots put out significant growth, one in the spring
and another in the fall.
FOLIAGE WALL A canopy that appears so dense as to resemble a wall.
