In-Depth Information
data analyst puts into practice the semantic data modeling
procedures. Each business unit contains this role.
The IT department also has data analysts of a more
technical kind. They have the role of accompanying the
business analysts and of translating the semantic data
models into a logical form and then into the technical terms
necessary for the MDM software (see Chapter 10).
In practice, the data analyst role is often delegated to the
IT department because the skills and means for modeling
are rarely available within business units.
7.2.3. Data architect
The data architect is a pivotal role in the Enterprise Data
Office, with a transversal function in relation to business
units in order to ensure support and quality control. S/he
oversees the evolution of the data models in order to
anticipate any problems that might arise, intervening, as a
last resort, to conduct arbitration on the modeling. The data
architect's skill set is very wide. S/he must have a perfect
understanding of the modeling procedures and have a good
understanding of the different business functions in the
company so as to able to become the key point of reference.
By establishing the data map (enterprise data
architecture), the data architect allows the responsibilities of
the data owners to be assigned. This role cannot be easily
delegated to the IT department because the business units
will then be unable to control, autonomously, the quality of
the modeling operations across the whole of the Information
System.
The data architect has an opposite number in the IT
department; that person assists him in the execution of the
data modeling procedures.
