Hostería Ítapoa is a Brazilian-run lodge that partially funds the Ítapoa Reserve project, a
sustainable community-run organization that attempts to boost the economies of indigen-
ous groups in and around nearby Puerto Quito by harvesting cacao. In fact, this hostel
even sells blocks of 100% cacao! If you're into the idea that relaxing in the hammock of
your private cabin deck enveloped by deep greenery whilst sipping organic shade-grown
chocolate is helping to save the rainforest, you'll want to reserve a stay at Ítapoa.

Hostería Mandála is an amazing mid-range catch, the kind of place you'd never get in
California and if you could, it would be absolutely unaffordable. Tropical gardens that en-
velop the custom-designed cabins are extensive enough to get lost in, making it a quiet es-
cape just 10 minutes from the city center. You can step off your hammock deck right into
the warm sand, and in seconds, dip into the Pacific. They even have a room just for instru-
ments from Esmeraldas Province and guests are encouraged to jam together. A pretty
unique way to get to know your neighbor.

This sprawling lodge just outside of Puerto López is bright, stunning and wrapped by lush
gardens like a tropical hacienda by the beach. All the rooms have private balconies, some
with ocean views and all guests have access to the outdoor pool, itself outfitted with a wa-

spot.
