In-Depth Information
izes in birds, as Silver Island or Isla de la Plata (an old pirate name!) is brimming with
migratory species that visit via the Galápagos, meaning you're getting the same value at a
millionth of the price. While many travelers who journey to Ecuador dream of visiting the
famed island archipelago, the reality of costs catches up with them and some are forced to
give up on it altogether. Silver Island, with its remote cliffs and blue-footed boobies,
makes for an unspoiled, affordable alternative that actually bears the nickname 'Poor
Man's Galápagos' for this reason. The best deals include a hike on the island followed by
snorkeling and lunch, courtesy of your operator. Don't forget to tip the good guides!
Food
Clandestino
Cristo del Consuelo and General Córdova
www.clandestinobarecuador.8m.com
$
Clandestino is a hippy cafe that serves organic coffee and loose leaf teas and becomes a
bar by night. They also serve delicious desserts, have a book exchange, offer salsa classes
and tons of info on Machalilla National Park. Don't go if you don't like reggae.
Étnias Café
General Córdova and Juan Montalvo
$
Étnias is a pretty French cafe with an adjoining handicraft market that sells exclusive
goods from all over Ecuador. Their rave-worthy breakfasts include - you guessed it -
crepes topped with Nutella and fruit, but savory crepes are also on the menu, as well as
some typical fast food options and really good waffles!
Bellitalia
One block from Malecón
$$-$$$
Bellitalia is located right on the Malecón and has a second floor terrace dining area lit up
by candlelight, the sounds and sights of Pacific waves just yards away. A pretty obvious
romantic option, but their Italian dishes are what makes the modern establishment so pop-
ular. The place is 100% authentic, from the homemade pastas (4 types from scratch) to the
'no pizza' policy.
