Near the Botanic Gardens and about five minutes' walk from
Karlovo Náměstí metro station, Hotel 16 is a friendly, family-run place with just 14
rooms, tucked away in a very quiet corner of town where you're more likely to hear
birdsong than traffic. The rooms vary in size and are simply but smartly furnished; the
best, at the back, have views onto the peaceful terraced garden. Buffet breakfast is in-
cluded in the price, and the hotel has a lift.

This hostel makes a pleasant change from the
usual characterless backpacker hive. There's a touch of contemporary style here, with
oak-veneer floors and stark, minimalist decor - the main motif is 'distressed' con-
crete, along with neutral colours and black metal-framed beds. The place is famous
for its 'designer' showers, with autographed glass screens and huge rainfall shower
heads. There is a very cool lounge in the basement, with red-brick vaults and black
leather sofas, and reception (open 24 hours) is staffed by a young, multilingual crew
who are always eager to help.
