Ecotourism Ger Camp TOURIST GER CAMP$$$
( 9973 4710; bergroo@hotmail.com ; GPS: N 47°58.722', E 107°28.907'; per person with meals
€35) For an offbeat experience, cross Terelj Gol and hike to a simple but pleasant ger
camp run by an eccentric Dutchman named Bert. Bert and his Mongolian wife make
Dutch cheese at the camp, and if you want to get your hands dirty, get up at the crack of
dawn and help them milk the cows. The meadow location here is gorgeous, and there's
great hiking opportunities in the surrounding hills. Bert also organises horse trips up to
Günjiin Süm, or can just help you arrange a quick ride on a neighbour's horse (per hour
€5).
To find the place on your own, go to the UB-2 hotel and walk around the right side of
the building. Cross the iron bridge over the river, follow the path to a second river, cross
the wooden bridge here, and then walk east (right). Follow the electric poles, crossing
streams on fallen tree trunks a number of times, until you get to pole 35; from here you
will see the gers off to your right. It's 2.5km from the UB-2 (a 40-minute walk). If that
sounds complicated, call Bert and he will meet you at the UB-2, possibly on one of his
neighbours' ox-carts.
Terelj Hotel HOTEL$$$
$$$
( 9900 7206; www.tereljhotel.com ; s/d from T360,000/440,000; ) Mongolia's
first luxury hotel and spa is an incongruous neoclassical building set on the edge of tiny
Tererlj village. Opened in 2008, the hotel is a self-contained complex with a gourmet
French restaurant (mains T20,000 to T40,000), professional spa, indoor swimming pool,
library and children's play centre. Rooms are immaculate, and it's a nice place to come if
you want to splurge on a fancy meal, even if you're staying elsewhere. Rates include use
of pool, sauna and gym. The spa costs extra.
UB-2 HOTEL$$$
$$$
( 9977 4125; www.ub2hotel.mn ; ger bed T35,000, s/d from T70,000/100,000) This place - a
branch of the Ulaanbaatar Hotel - is not bad on its own but looks a little sad compared to
the swanky Terelj Hotel next door. The food at the restaurant (served 8am to 9pm; mains
T7000 to T10,000) is disappointing, but the rooms are fine. Facilities here include a golf
driving range and par-three golf course (green fees T60,000, club hire T15,000).
