( 11-328 737; www.nomadicjourneys.com ; per person with meals US$85-95) Nomadic Journeys
( Click here ) runs this remote and low-impact ger camp in the upper Tuul valley, which
makes a nice base if you are headed to Khagiin Khar Nuur, which is an eight-hour horse
ride away. The camp has a library of books on Mongolia and a number of great activities,
including horse riding ($35 per day), mountain biking, yak carting, river boating and
even portable saunas! You'll need to book well in advance for these trips. The price in-
cludes transfers to and from Ulaanbaatar (around three hours, one way). Free transfers
are on Wednesday and Saturdays only, though. On other days you will have to pay for a
private transfer.
Getting There & Away
BICYCLE
A mountain bike is an excellent way of getting around some of the Terelj area. Seven
Summits ( Click here ) is one of a number of places in Ulaanbaatar that rents bikes.
BUS
The road from Ulaanbaatar to Terelj Village, which goes through part of the national
park, is in pretty good nick. A bus (T2500, 90 minutes) departs at noon and 4pm in sum-
mer, or 3pm in winter (1 October to 15 May), from Peace Ave, opposite the Narantuul
Hotel. It then stops at every bus stop heading east along Peace Ave. Get there with 15
minutes to spare as they sometimes depart early.
Going the other way, it leaves Terelj at 8am and 7pm; catch it near the UB-2 hotel, on
the road. You may have to pay an extra T2500 for a bike or heavy luggage. For addition-
al information, ask a Mongolian speaker to contact the bus conductor, Ms Nara (
9665
4818) . She doesn't speak English.
Another option is to take one of the frequent buses between Ulaanbaatar and Nalaikh
(T800, every 10 minutes), and then to hook up with one of the shared minibuses which
shuttles between Nalaikh and Terelj Village (T1300 per person, roughly every hour).
HITCHING
Hitching out of Ulaanbaatar can be difficult because vehicles going to Terelj could leave
from anywhere. The cheapest way to hitch to Terelj is to take a minivan for Baganuur or
Nalaikh and get off at the turn-off to Terelj, where you are far more likely to get a lift.
