Izu-ei has been specialising in unagi (eel) for more than 260 years. It's served a
number of different ways, but purists would insist upon getting it charcoal-grilled,
sauced and then laid on a bed of steamed rice - a dish called unajū . Izu-ei has an
appropriately traditional atmosphere but is hardly stuffy. Kid-friendly (read: eel-

Sasa-no-Yuki opened its doors in the Edo period and has been serving the same
signature dishes ever since. Tofu is made fresh every morning with water from the
shop's own well. The best seats overlook a tiny garden with a koi (carp) pond. Ve-
getarians should not assume everything is purely vegie: ask before ordering.
