In-Depth Information
Japan's oldest zoo was established in 1882, and is home to animals from around
the globe, but the biggest attractions are two giant pandas that arrived from China
in 2011 - Rī Rī and Shin Shin. Ueno Zoo is larger than you'd think, given the obvi-
ous space constraints of Tokyo. ( Ueno Dōbutsu-en; www.tokyo-zoo.net ; 9-83 Ueno-kōen, Taitō-

Near the Ameya-yokochō shopping arcade, this busy place rustles up top-class
soba ; from the simple zaru soba (plain, cold buckwheat noodles to dip in broth)
to the richly filling tenseiro (noodles with shrimp and vegetable tempura). There's
a picture menu to help choose. Look for the black-granite sign in front that says in
English 'Since 1892'. (

Housed in a beautifully maintained, nearly 100-year-old wooden building, Hantei
is a local landmark. Delectable skewers of seasonal kushiage (fried meat, fish and
vegetables) are served with refreshing side dishes. Lunch courses include eight
sticks and dinner courses start with six, after which additional rounds (¥210 for
one skewer) will continue to appear until you say stop. ( 3828-1440;
