Regarding memory allocation
Since HANA is an in-memory appliance, you should understand
some of the different ways that memory can be allocated in the
HANA appliance before you attempt to understand the information
in the HANA administration console. The physical memory in a
HANA system refers to the total amount of memory that is installed
in the system. Allocated memory refers to the memory pool of the available physical
memory that has been reserved for use by the operating system. Used memory refers
to the amount of memory from the total physical memory that contains the actual
items stored in the database.
The P ERFORMANCE tab also provides valuable insight into how your SAP BW on HANA
system is performing. An example of the P ERFORMANCE tab is shown in Figure 6.13.
From the P ERFORMANCE tab, you can monitor process threads and you can even end pro-
cess threads if problems occur.

HANA DB backup
Once you have verified that the SAP BW on HANA database is healthy and is performing
to your satisfaction, you should perform a full database backup from HANA Studio. In or-
der to create a backup in HANA Studio, your user account will need to have either the
BACKUP OPERATOR or BACKUP ADMIN privilege, as well as the CATALOG READ
