City Inn Right on the River Clyde and near the conference and exhibition center,
this smart hotel with its waterside terrace is not exactly in the heart of the action.
But neither is it very far away. Part of a small chain, City Inns are modern and con-

Devoncove Hotel At the Devoncove, rooms are comfortable if not huge, although
by some local standards the singles here are downright roomy; no need to stand on
the bed in order to open the closet door. The more spacious rooms face the street,
which is typically quite busy, although double-pane windows muffle most of the noise.

Kirklee Hotel A red-sandstone Edwardian terraced house, with elegant bay
windows, near the West End's diverse night life on Byres Road and the Botanic
Gardens, the Kirklee is often recommended locally. Overlooking a private garden,
the Edwardian guest lounge has period furniture. The high-ceilinged bedrooms are
average in size, but some are large enough to accommodate families.

Manor Park Hotel This impressive West End town house, built in 1895 (in the
slightly out of the way Broomhill district) was converted into a hotel in 1947. Decor
offers a blend of modern and traditional furnishings, including beechwood pieces set
against a background of floral wallpaper. Each guest room comes with a neat little
bathroom with either tub or shower; top floor units are the largest.

Alamo Guest House This highly regarded small hotel faces toward Kelvin-
grove Park, the Art Gallery, and Glasgow University. The period furniture and Victo-
rian interior design details (especially in the entrance hallway) are particularly
impressive for the price. Most rooms share bathroom facilities, however.
