In-Depth Information
Property owner Oprah Winfrey has brought low-key star power to tiny Keokea, the last
real town before Hana if you're swinging around the southern part of the island. The sum
total of the town center consists of a coffee shop, an art gallery, a gas station and two
small stores, the Ching Store and the Fong Store. As for Oprah, her presence might be
less low-key in coming years; if news reports are true, she plans to sell organic veget-
ables and food products sourced from her Upcountry land.
Sights
Drawn by rich soil, Hakka Chinese farmers migrated to this remote corner of Kula at the
turn of the 20th century. Their influence is readily visible throughout the village. Keo-
kea's c 1907 landmark St John's Episcopal Church MAP GOOGLE MAP still bears its
name in Chinese characters. For a time Sun Yat-sen, father of the Chinese nationalist
movement, lived on the outskirts of Keokea. He's honored at Sun Yat-sen Park MAP ,
found along the Kula Hwy (Hwy 37) 1.7 miles beyond Grandma's Coffee House. The
park has picnic tables and is a great place to soak up the broad vistas that stretch across
to West Maui.
