TOP OF CHAPTER
ʻUlupalakua Ranch & Beyond
This sprawling 20,000-acre ranch was established in the mid-19th century by James Ma-
kee, a whaling captain who jumped ship and befriended Hawaiian royalty. King David
Kalakaua, the ʻMerrie Monarch,' became a frequent visitor who loved to indulge in late-
night rounds of poker and champagne. The ranch is still worked by paniolo, who have
been herding cattle here for generations. More than 2000 head of cattle, as well as a
small herd of Rocky Mountain elk, dot the hillside pastures.
The ranch is green in more ways than one. The owners restored a rare native dryland
forest on the upper slopes of the ranch's property and also set aside more than 11,000
acres to be preserved as perpetual agricultural land. In December 2012, the ranch began
hosting the Upcountry's first wind energy farm.
Today most people come to visit Tedeschi Vineyards, Maui's sole winery, which is on
ʻUlupalakua Ranch land, about 6 miles beyond Keokea. After the winery, it's another 25
undulating miles to Kipahulu along the remote Piʻilani Hwy.
