You'll notice snorkelers taking to the water near mile marker 14. Note that the coral reef
is shallow and silty, and the ʻSharks May Be Present' signs are the real thing. There were
three shark attacks off Olowalu between 1993 and 2002.
Olowalu Petroglyphs

A short walk behind the general store leads to ancient Hawaiian stone carvings. Park just
beyond the water tower at the back of the store. From here, it's a quarter-mile walk up an
open road to the petroglyph site. The path is easy to follow; just keep the cinder cone
straight ahead of you. As with most of Maui's petroglyphs, these figures are carved into
the vertical sides of cliffs rather than on horizontal lava like on the Big Island.
Most of the Olowalu figures have been damaged, but you can still make some out. If
you have mobility issues, it's OK to drive to the site, but please be respectful of neigh-
boring landowners.

the other, the setting is pure

. But the location, ocean view and simple amenities
(cold-water showers, outhouses, picnic tables, drinking water) kick things up a notch. A-
frame cabins with six cots are also available for groups for $600 per night.
If you're used to KOAs, then this campground - with its tightly packed sites and what
are probably long-term campers - may not be your place. Enter across the highway from
the Olowalu General Store then drive southeast beside Hwy 30 to the campground.
