can order savory pot pies, topping-laden burgers or a rich sandwich like the 'pork,
pork...mmm pork.' Prices are a bit steep, but hey, you won't leave hungry - or skinny.
Ukumehame Beach Park & Around
Midway between mile markers 11 and 12 is Papalaua Wayside Park ( 661-4685;
www.co.maui.hi.us ; between MP 11 & 12 Honoapiʻilani Hwy; permit & $5-8 fee required; no camp-
ing on Wed & Thu) , a lackluster county park squeezed between the road and the ocean,
though it does have firepits, toilets and tent camping under thorny kiawe trees. For more
details about obtaining a camping permit, visit the Maui County government website at
www.mauicounty.gov . Note that the place buzzes all night with traffic noise.
At mile marker 12 is Ukumehame Beach Park . Shaded by ironwood trees, this sandy
beach is OK for a quick dip, but because of the rocky conditions most locals stick with
picnicking and fishing. Dive and snorkel boats anchor offshore at Coral Gardens . This
reef also creates Thousand Peaks toward its west end, with breaks favored by long-
boarders and beginner surfers.
The pull-off for the western end of the Lahaina Pali Trail MAP is just south of mile
marker 11, on the inland side of the road.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Lahaina to Kaʻanapali
The stretch between Lahaina and Kaʻanapali offers a couple of roadside beach parks plus
two good B&Bs.
Wahikuli Wayside Park
Two miles north of Lahaina, Wahikuli Wayside Park occupies a narrow strip of beach
flanked by the busy highway. Although the beach is mostly backed by a black-rock re-
taining wall, there's also a small sandy area. Swimming conditions are usually fine, and
when the water is calm you can snorkel near the lava outcrops at the park's south end.
The park also has picnic tables, showers and restrooms.
Sleeping
The listed B&B is located in a residential neighborhood between Lahaina and Kaʻanap-
ali, inland of Hwy 30. It's just a five-minute drive from the beach.
