Launiupoko Beach Park
Beginner and intermediate surfers head to this beach park , a popular surf spot three
miles south of Lahaina. The south side of the beach has small waves ideal for beginner
surfers, while the north side ratchets it up a notch for those who have honed their skills.
These days, you're also likely to see paddle surfers plying through the surf. The park is
ideal for families - na keiki have a blast wading in the large rock-enclosed shoreline pool
and good picnic facilities invite you to linger. Launiupoko is at the traffic lights at mile
marker 18.
Sleeping
For B&Bs in Maui, remember to book a room ahead of time. Showing up late at night,
unannounced and without reservations, is strongly discouraged.

( 667-6669; www.hooilohouse.com ; 138 Awaiku St; r $309; ) At this 'zenful' re-
treat, six Asian- and Maui-themed rooms hug an A-framed community area with a
sweeping view of Lanaʻi. Stylish furnishings differ by room - many contain Balinese im-
ports - but all have a private lanai and an eclectically designed outdoor shower. Break-
fast includes fresh muffins and bread, cereal, granola and fruit - often plucked from the
property's two-acre organic orchard.
Solar panels installed in 2011 generate 90% of the house's power. There are refrigerat-
ors in all rooms.
Olowalu
The West Maui Mountains form a scenic backdrop, giving Olowalu its name, which
means ʻmany hills.' For the moment, the tiny village is marked by the Olowalu General
Store, Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop and a juice and fruit stand. Construction preparations
for the controversial Olowalu Town Project, which calls for the development of 1500
housing units on land just south of the village, were visible from the highway in 2012.
The good news? Half of the units will be set aside as affordable housing. The bad? The
coral reef at mile marker 14 at Olowalu is a popular snorkeling spot, and environmental
groups are concerned that the project will harm the reef.
