To escape any semblance of a tourist scene, hunker down in Kahana or Napili, lovely
seaside communities that are known for their condos and budget-friendly prices. Further
north, Hawaiian history and swanky exclusivity have formed an intriguing, and some-
times uneasy, alliance in breezy Kapalua. And for off-the-grid excitement, there's always
the wild drive around the untamed northern coast on the Kahekili Hwy.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Lahaina to Maʻalaea
The drive between Lahaina and Maʻalaea offers fine mountain scenery, but in winter
everyone is craning seaward to spot humpback whales cruising just offshore. For good
whale watching, pull over at Papawai Point midway between mile markers 8 and 9. Note
that the road sign reads simply ʻscenic point,' but there's a turning lane into it, so slow
down and you won't miss it.
