the-charts romantic. The Bamboo Guest House, which sleeps six, is great for families too

Enchanted Rainforest Cottages

cably kept, they are embedded in a remarkable fern forest landscaped with paths and koi
ponds.
The one-bedroom Apapane Guesthouse ($140) is full of light, bringing nature indoors.
Details include a vaulted ceiling, a slate bath, a gas stove, and ohia wood floors. The
ʻAlalā Hiker's Retreat is smaller, with no cooking facilities, but offers the same attention
to detail at a bargain price ($85). Each has an extraordinarily peaceful lanai, which im-
merses you in a leafy world of bird calls.

properties targeting different markets. Volcano Hale is group hiker territory, with nine
rooms, three baths and shared kitchen. Lokahi Lodge ($95-130), while a bit motel-ish, is
perfect for families, particularly the private loft (sleeps six). And romantic Chalet
Kilauea has a cozy country-cottage feel, with 25 unique rooms, including a nice honey-
moon suite.
While there have been issues with this property in the past, most notably at the front
desk, attentive new management ensures that all grounds are well-kept and steady im-
provements are underway.

erty. The studio and the artist's house are the most charming, the latter offering a full kit-
